Pest Prevention # 5 Columbus Ga, Dryer Vent Has No Cover

This is Roger Tinker, Owner and General Manager of ALL STAR PEST CONTROL in
Columbus, Georgia. The topic of this podcast is Dryer vents that do not have the cover firmly
attached to them. I see so many homes that do not have a cover over their dryer vent. A lot of people
remove the cover and put a make shift screen around the vent opening to catch the lint coming
through the dryer vent hose. I agree that the lint does not need to blow everywhere, However, I would
leave the vent cover on and simply put the screen around the vent opening.
Now, I want to discuss why I would leave the vent cover on the dryer vent. This leaves a wide
open hole in the side of your house for all kinds of pest to invade your home. Ants can crawl in and go
into your dryer; Roaches will walk right into the opening and work their way into the dryer. Dryer vent
pipes do not have a prefect seal and small pest will find an opening and invade your home; spiders
will join the party as well.
Rats will come through the dryer vent; however, they will gnaw large holes in the vent piping
and make themselves right at home. Once a rat is inside your home, they leave a lot of smelly
droppings everywhere they go as well as damage a lot of food products. You will also have to repair
the dryer vent because you do not want the fire hazard of all that lint pile up behind your dryer. Lint
will ignite with just a small spark and could cause your house to burn down.
I would advise to immediately go check your dryer vent and do any repair just as soon as I
could.
Please feel free to contact me if I can help you in any way.
