Halloween.
This is Roger Tinker, owner and General Manager of ALL STAR PEST CONTROL
located in Columbus, Georgia. My subject today is Halloween. I want to talk about what
we did for Halloween when I was 12 years old and that was over 60 years ago. A lot of
us kids made our own costumes because our parents could not afford to buy them for
us. Many of us took an old sheet, cut two holes for our eyes and we were ghost. Some
of us could save up enough money to buy a mask to put over our face and wear some
of our parents clothes to look like we were skeletons. You were really lucky if your
parents could buy you a costume.
As soon as it got dark, we were allowed to go to all of the neighbors houses and
collect our candy. Many times, we went without our parents. We would walk our entire
neighborhood without any fear of anyone bothering us or being in any danger. Back
then all the neighbors knew each other and looked out for all us kids.
Almost all the houses in the neighborhood had some kind of Halloween
decorations. There were trees rolled with toilet paper, Pumpkins with faces carved into
them and sometimes a lit candle inside the pumpkin. I remember taking a broom and
pushing the handle in the ground and then putting some old clothes around the top part
of the broom to make a scare crow.
Back then our parents knew we were safe and allowed us to have fun on our
own. Times have changed, and in my opinion, not for the good. No longer can we allow
our kids to roam the neighborhoods at night by themselves. We meet at Churches or
other places where there are supervised activities for our children. Trunk or Treats have
become really popular.
We have adapted to our changing times so that our children can still enjoy the
thrill of getting a lot of candy once a year and still provide a safe environment for them
to do so.
Halloween may mean different things to different people, but most kids look forward to
the excuse to get a lot of candy.
I hope we all have a safe Halloween and that our kids enjoy their candy.
