Little White House Franklin Roosevelt’s Warm Springs Georgia Home

This is Roger Tinker, Owner and General Manager of All Star Pest Control located in Columbus, Georgia.
I remember as a child going to the Little White House when my family lived in Macon Georgia. I was 8 years old back in 1959 when I first went to Warm Springs to tour the Little White House with my parents and my brother John who was 6 at that time. Things that stood out to me as an eight year old are still somewhat the same for this 73 year old version of myself. The small and simple kitchen with a water bucket to dip water out of was similar to my grandparent’s kitchen. It is said that President Roosevelt designed this structure himself. The rooms are rather small and simple. I am told this was his get away from all the pressures place to go. The back porch is a large cement structure that was constructed to look like the rear of a large ship. President Roosevelt loved the sea I am told.
There is also a Black 1939 Ford on display that he used to ride and see the folks in Warm Springs, Pine Mountain and other areas around Warm Springs. Imagine you are in downtown Manchester Georgia and the President of the United States stops his car just to say “Hello” to you. Many people had just that happen when President Roosevelt would come to his Little White House in Warm Springs.
There is an unfinished portrait of President Roosevelt on display at the Little White House. He died while it was being painted.
Since my youth, things have been added to the grounds around the Little White House, Prices for tours have changed and many things added to the museum.
One thing that will never change is my fond memories of going there as a child. I have been back many times, and I hope you will make time, particularly for your children, to have fond memories of the Little White House.
Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help to you.
