Pest Prevention # 4 Columbus Homes Should Seal Around Dryer Vents

This is Roger Tinker, Owner and General Manager of ALL STAR PEST CONTROL located in
Columbus Georgia. Our subject for this discussion will be the seal around your dryer vent. I see so
many dryer vents that are 3 inches around placed in a hole in the wall that is 3 and ½ inches around
or larger. The first thing that comes to my mind is how much heat in the winter time and how much
cool air in the summer time are you losing. That much gap in the wall can really make run utility bills
sky high.
There are a lot of different pest that can find access to your home with a gap that big. Ants will trail in
and then find a food source and bring all their friends back. No gap, no ants. Roaches like the
American Cockroach will come in looking for food as well as water. The American roach is about 2
inches long, They are easy to spot because of their size. Spiders love cracks and will nest in the wall
and then multiply. You certainly do not want a brown recluse spider in your laundry room.
That size gap is also plenty big enough for rats to gnaw their way into your comfortable home and
cause a lot of damage to your home. Even small curious snakes will at least try to go thru the gap.
There are several ways to fill in or fix the gap around the dryer vent. The important thing is to look for
the gap to make sure you have a good seal. If you do not have a good seal, you should fix it or have it
fixed immediately.
